HLS 3020: Domestic Terrorism and Homegrown Violent Extremists (HVEs)


Domestic Terrorism and Homegrown Violent Extremists (HVEs) examines historical and current trends of domestic terrorist groups and homegrown violent extremists (HVEs). This course also analyzes the ideological and motivational objectives of domestic terrorism as well as the role of the local, state, and federal law enforcement and homeland security stakeholders play in combatting this threat.


  1. Discuss the historical context of domestic terrorism.
  2. Examine current trends as they relate to violent extremist threats within the United States.
  3. Analyze left wing, right wing, and other special interest groups.
  4. Discuss the ideological, political, and motivational objectives of domestic terrorism.
  5. Examine the role of government in combatting domestic and lone-wolf terrorism as well as homegrown violent extremism.
  6. Discuss the radicalization of the homegrown terrorist.
