Examines the past, present, and future of the American criminal justice system with emphasis on changing philosophies in the American system.

Objectives

  1. Discuss the major components of the criminal justice system.
  2. Contrast the challenges versus the opportunities of diversity and multiculturalism within the justice system.
  3. Summarize the importance of maintaining crime statistics.
  4. Explain the essential elements of crime as related to intent and blameworthiness.
  5. Examine the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth amendments as applied to criminal justice.
  6. Identify how a police officer uses discretion in carrying out his/her daily tasks.
  7. Differentiate between men’s and women’s prisons in regard to inmate issues and subcultures.
  8. Discuss the five goals of contemporary criminal sentencing.
