Mike McEniry began his teaching career at Iowa Falls High School, a position he held for over three years. After spending two years teaching in the Osage Community School District, Mike came to Mason City High School where he held the position of Associate Director of Bands for thirty-two years before retiring in 2017. Mike has taught brass private lessons for thirty-six years. He has served as adjudicator/clinician for solo/ensembles, jazz and concert bands at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
Mike is a 1974 graduate of Mason City High School. He received his B.M.E. from the University of Northern Iowa in 1979 and his M.S.E. from Drake University in 1996. Mike states that he has been blessed with several outstanding mentors such as Robert W. Dean, Gilbert G. Lettow, Jon Hansen and Dr. Karl Holvik.
Mike is a charter member of Raiders of the Lost Art, a dixieland band. He is the co-founder and lead trombone of the Jazz Coalition Big Band. Mike has performed with many North Iowa groups such as the Mason City Municipal Band, Spats and Flappers Speakeasy Orchestra, North Iowa Concert Band, North Iowa Symphony Orchestra and the Mason City Big Band. He is also actively involved in music at First Covenant Church in Mason City.
At Mason City High School, Mike received the Principal’s Award of Merit for Excellence in Instruction and the Principal’s Award of Merit for Excellence in Teaching. Mike received the Karl King Distinguished Service Active award from NCIBA and the Karl King Distinguished Service Retired award from NCIBA. In 2017, Mike was nominated by his students and received the Golden Apple Award, sponsored by TV station KIMT.
