A North Central Iowa native, Melissa (Mel) Shallberg, taught in the Kansas City metropolitan area in the Kansas City, Kan. and Olathe, Kan. unified school districts upon completing her bachelor’s degree. At the same time she was involved with the William Baker Choral Foundation for 18 years; first as a singer/soloist, then vocal coach, then Executive Associate Director.
Upon repatriating to Iowa in 2011, her experience in community-based music education is serving her well. She sings with and is the Vocal Coach for Una Vocis, a select adult community choir centered in Mason City. She also is the founder/director of NordKor, a community children’s choir that rehearses in Mason City & Clear Lake. Singers from 8 towns from public, private and the home school community meet weekly and perform during the academic year.
When not making music, Mel enjoys reading, gardening, walking, swimming, scuba diving, sewing, chauffeuring her teenage daughter and renovating the late 1800’s farmhouse with her husband of 26 years.
