DJ Phalen (aka Prof D), is a professor in the
Homeland Security program here at Waldorf University where he has taught this and many other courses within the Homeland Security, Criminal Justice, Emergency Management and Fire programs. Furthermore, he has been the course writer for several of the undergraduate Homeland Security and College of Safety and Emergency Services courses. Finally, I am the Chapter Coordinator for Columbia Southern University’s Chapter of the Order of the Sword & Shield National Honor Society (Omicron Sigma Sigma).
Phalen earned his Master of Arts in Homeland Security with honors and a Bachelor of Science in Public Health with honors and is a lifetime member in several honor societies: Epsilon Pi Phi Emergency Management (Homeland Security Honor Society), Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences, Delta Epsilon Tau International Graduate Honor Society, Psi Chi - National Honor Society in Psychology, Golden Key International Honor Society, and the Order of the Sword & Shield National Honor Society (Omicron Sigma Sigma). He also holds the national Certified Homeland Protection Professional (CHPP) designation awarded by the National Domestic Preparedness Coalition and the Terrorism & Homeland Security Specialist designation awarded by the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) and California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI).
He has professional experience in the fields of counterterrorism, EMS and special operations EMS, medic/technical rescue specialist with the Sheriff's department search and rescue, federal and local disaster and medical teams (Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) and Medical Reserve Corp (MRC), law enforcement, firefighting, and healthcare/ healthcare leadership. He has also completed the Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings (IRTB), and Prevention of and Response to Suicide Bombing Incidents (PRSBI) Technical Operations (Instructor) courses.
Phalen is a member of a number of professional associations such as the International Association for Counterterrorism & Security Professionals (IACSP), International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association (ICTOA), the Special Operations Medical Association (SOMA), National Sheriff’s Association (NSA), Global Society of Homeland and National Security Professionals (GSHNSP), The National Domestic Preparedness Coalition, Inc. (NDPCI), International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) and the International Association of Interviewers (IAI).
In addition to teaching at CSU and Waldorf University, he also served as the Medical Terrorism Liaison Officer (TLO) Coordinator at the San Diego Law Enforcement Coordination Center (SD-LECC) Terrorism Unit/Regional Terrorism Threat Assessment Center (RTTAC) where he developed the Medical Terrorism Liaison Officer (TLO) program. Currently, he serves as the Sector Chief of the Healthcare and Public Health Sector for San Diego InfraGard (an FBI-affiliated organization) and as the National Sector Chief. Additionally, he is a contracted consultant/subject matter expert doing course review of new/existing FEMA/DHS training courses, served as a subject matter expert (Homeland Defense and Security and Medical) for the Homeland Defense and Security Information Analysis Center (HDIAC), serve as the counter-terrorism/hospital counter-terrorism advisor/trainer for a major private security contractor, and regularly contribute to several peer-reviewed professional journals, newsletters, and blogs in the terrorism/counterterrorism and emergency management communities.
On the personal side, he likes to go camping, hiking, overlanding and trail running. He is a Muay Thai instructor, and also just started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu again after nearly a decade hiatus.
