The creative writing program at Waldorf University offers an engaging and innovative curriculum that provides students with an opportunity to develop artistic expression and hone literary technique through intensive courses in writing, one-on-one sessions with the faculty, and workshops with nationally renowned writers.
Department Hours: 8am - 5pm
Join our vibrant program for a chance to:
- read a wide variety of contemporary literature and discuss themes and analyze techniques in seminar-style classes
- explore many genres of writing and develop your craft in writers’ workshops and capstone thesis projects
- engage with motivated and caring peers as writers, thinkers, and friends
- work one-on-one with faculty who are both excellent teachers and published writers.
We offer substantial creative writing scholarships, up to full tuition in the case of deserving applicants, and these scholarships are renewable for all four years of study. Scholarship are awarded to students with scholastic achievements and high quality writing ability. Additionally, the Pillars Program awards scholarships to scholars with interest in creative writing.
Students in the program can be active members of the Warriors Writing Club, which meets weekly to share writing and help with planned activities such as Open Mic events. Students can also apply to edit and produce Waldorf Literary Review: A Journal of Engaged Writing, the annual campus literary magazine.
In addition to publishing their work in the Waldorf Literary Review, students are invited to submit work to the Salveson Prizes in Prose and Poetry each year. Students can assist with an annual Top of Iowa High School Writing Contest, sponsored by the Waldorf Creative Writing Program. And finally, our Distinguished Visiting Writers Series is a unique guest-author series designed to offer students a deeper insight into writing. In the past, students have worked with nationally recognized authors such as Lauren Alleyne, Kij Johnson, and Benjamin Percy.
