Youth Recovery Specialist - PT

 

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

The Youth Recovery Specialist will supervise and care for residents of the house on a rotating on-duty, off-duty basis, while providing an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.  The Youth Recovery Specialist is responsible for the daily living routine and general management of the house so that each resident can grow and develop as an individual to his/her fullest capacity.  The position is mainly one of resident supervision and maintenance.  The Youth Recovery Specialist may have a “floating” schedule or a “regular” schedule.  A “floating” Youth Recovery Specialist may be scheduled at either facility on an as-needed basis and hours may change or be added with little warning.  A “regular” Youth Recovery Specialist will have a regular schedule at one of our facilities.  This schedule may change as staff changes and as on-call needs dictate.

  • Relates to residents in a caring, supportive, and therapeutic manner:
    1. Takes an active interest in each resident as an individual and deals respectfully with his/her thoughts, feelings, and choices.
    2. Listens effectively to residents.
    3. Respects the individual resident's rights to make his/her own decisions and to deal with the consequences and reactions to those decisions.
    4. Supervises volunteers and substitute staff while on duty.
    5. Assures proper coverage is available for the house.
 
  • Provides the necessary amount of structure to facilitate growth and productive functioning of the facility:
    1. Serves as an appropriate model for behavior to the residents.
    2. Reads the log upon coming on duty and updates the log on each resident daily.
    3. Consistently observes limits and consequences and sees that they are consistently carried out.Enforces rules and procedures as established in the Handbook and Personal Contracts.
    4. Helps plan and carry out group activities according to the schedule.
 
  • Provides for the daily maintenance of the house and assures that safe living conditions are provided in compliance with fire, safety, and health regulations:
    1. Keeps receipts of all checks written, attaches to Check Request Forms, and enters the expense in the checkbook.
    2. Answers telephone and receives visitors.Contacts appropriate on-call staff in an emergency.
    3. May oversee morning schedule of residents including wake-up, supervising showers and chores, and preparing breakfast.
    4. May prepare and serve well balanced and nutritious meals as per dietitian’s menu and Department of Education guidelines. May shop for food and keeps food expenses at a minimum.If involved in purchasing or preparing food, will do all necessary check requests and meal statistics/paperwork.Will supervise clients during meals.
    5. Manages the residents' records of clothing budget.Prepares residents' initial clothing list and takes residents shopping, when necessary.
    6. Observes and instructs residents as to fire and health regulations.Carries out fire/tornado drills on a monthly basis.
    7. Assures personal hygiene of residents through proper care of body and clothing and the living quarters.Oversees bed-stripping and supervises resident and household laundry.
    8. Responsible for making doctor appointments in event of an emergency, flu, etc., and coordinates with the Residential Program Coordinator or Designee for routine examinations.Transports resident(s) to doctor, if necessary.
    9. Oversees nightly schedule for residents, including rooms in order and lights out, and checks and maintains building security.Inspects the house to see that it is clean and orderly.
    10. Fills out work orders, as needed.
    11. Updates Night House staff switching to on-duty shift about status of each resident and any significant changes at the house.
    12. Updates other staff about the status of each resident and any significant changes at the house.
    13. May be responsible to keep the YSS van/auto in good repair; e.g., oil changes, tune-ups, tire rotations, etc.Reports vehicle problems to staff in charge of the van.
    14. Assures that the van/auto is washed and cleaned out weekly.
    15. Purchases gas (self-serve pump) at the designated gas station.
    16. Makes out chore charts at the house on a weekly basis.
    17. Picks up videos and anything that is needed for house activities and returns them (if borrowed) on time.
    18. Completes stats and other paperwork in a correct and timely fashion.
    19. Transports residents to meetings, work, recreational activities, etc.
    20. Plans special events: birthdays, graduations, etc.
    21. Gathers and addresses weekly reports to parents and workers.
    22. Distributes medications at appropriate times.
    23. Will be on a rotating "on-call" for runaway reports and crisis situations.
    24. Supervises physical/recreational activities.
    25. Keeps the house orderly at all times and cleans, as needed.Strips the beds and cleans the rooms of discharged residents.
    26. Keeps the linen and supply closets clean and orderly.Organizes bedding and personal and school items for residents.
    27. Supervises unpacking of new residents and packing of discharged residents.Keeps a clothing inventory on each resident.
    28. Appropriately searches clients and clients’ belongings at admission and at other times as appropriate.
    29. Checks client rooms daily and keeps them locked when not accessible to clients.
 
  • Other duties include:
    1. Adheres to agency and accepted professional ethics.
    2. Attends Residential Review/Continued Stay Review, staff meetings, in-service trainings, supervision, and other meetings, as required.
    3. May supervise volunteers and substitutes if higher level staff are unavailable.
    4. May arrange for and accompany residents on trips, as deemed necessary by the Residential Program Coordinator or Designee.
    5. Accompanies and stays with residents while at psychiatric appointments.
    6. Wears a name tag while on duty and complies with dress code policy.
    7. Will be on an on-call coverage rotation.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE A High School Diploma/equivalent is required.
One year of human service related experience is required.
 
 
PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree in social work, education or related field is preferred.

POSITION TYPE
This is a part-time, non-exempt position. 
 
TRAVEL
No travel is expected for this position. A valid Iowa driver’s license is required.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level is usually minimal to moderate. Works in well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.

While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; may need to sit for extended periods of time; use stairs, as needed; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Physically move to access all YSS locations. Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, repeatedly. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
 

VOLUNTEERISM

This position will engage and assist all YSS volunteers (individuals and groups) adhering to volunteer management best practices to ensure meaningful volunteer experiences. This position will maximize the skills and interests of all YSS volunteers to better impact our organization and the youth and families we serve.
