Hallmark Graphic Design/Illustration interns are placed into different creative studios into roles that can be truly Graphic Design based, truly Illustration based, or a hybrid of both. Examples of roles specific to those studios are outlined below.
HYBRID DESIGNER, GREETINGS STUDIOS: CORE LINES
Use your exceptional graphic design skills and your illustration, hand lettering, and typography capabilities in one of the largest creative studios at Hallmark. In this role, you will be responsible for the concept and creation of greeting card product packages from start to finish. Some of our designs even call for handmade attachments, unique finishes, and other embellishments, so if you have additional maker skills (sewing, knitting, laser cutting, embroidery, etc.), you would be able to utilize them in this role. We are seeking a true hybrid talent for this internship opportunity: your ability to seamlessly integrate design, illustration, and lettering into your concepts and solutions will set you apart as a top candidate for this unique role.
HYBRID DESIGNER, GREETINGS STUDIOS: MULTICULTURAL LINES
As a part of this diverse, trend-savvy, and idea-rich team, you will utilize your multicultural knowledge and experience to create concepts and final designs for our multicultural-focused products included in the Mahogany (African American) and Vida (Spanish language) product lines. We are looking for individuals who have passion and affinity for multicultural product to contribute at a high level through their design, illustration, and lettering skills to create final greeting card concepts and solutions.
HYBRID DESIGNER, GIFT PRESENTATION & STATIONERY
As a designer in Gift Presentation and Stationery, you’ll have the opportunity to develop seasonal and everyday gift presentation and stationery solutions that are unique to our retailers. During your internship, you will work on a variety of concepts ranging from thematic gift presentation collections to lines of home office and calendar products to colorful and sophisticated stationery suites. You'll have the opportunity to work on both seasonal (Christmas, Easter) and every day (baby, birthday) products and collections.
GRAPHIC DESIGNER, CREATIVE MARKETING STUDIO
The Creative Marketing Studio at Hallmark is an in-house agency comprised of Hallmark brand experts who deliver strategic, award-winning work that directly influences the company’s bottom line. As a member of this diverse team, you’ll work with art directors, editorial strategists, copywriters, and other designers in a collaborative, agency-like environment. You'll have the opportunity to work on projects for both internal Hallmark clients as well as external clients. Utilize your graphic design skills, your branding expertise, and your knack for advertising on a wide range of formats – including ads, campaigns, logos, videos, collateral development, and more – to get our consumers excited about what’s new at Hallmark.
3D PRODUCT DESIGNER, RETAIL STUDIO
As a 3D product designer you’ll have the opportunity to develop seasonal and everyday gifts that are unique to our Hallmark Gold Crown retailers. You’ll work on a variety of concepts ranging from thematic seasonal gift collections and home décor items to interactive plush (sound, movement and storytelling) and storybooks, as well as many new-to-the marketplace items. If you are a conceptual thinker who loves to create product through form and function combined with illustration, graphic design, typography and technology, this team could be the perfect place for you! In this role, you will be involved in every step of the creative process from idea to shelf, including: brainstorming, concept sketching, character development, prototyping, and creating final artwork for product solutions.
CONCEPT ARTIST, KEEPSAKES STUDIO
Hallmark’s ornaments studios are home to some of the most uniquely talented character artists, sculptors, modeling artists, engineers, and illustrators in the country. If you are an illustrator who loves to create concepts and stories through your artwork, this team could be the perfect place for you! In this role, you will be involved in every step of the creative process, including brainstorming, concept sketching, character and story development, turnaround drawings, and creating artwork for final product solutions.
ILLUSTRATOR, TRENDS STUDIO
As an illustration intern in the Trends Studio, you'll join a talented team of trends experts who specialize in the research, identification, and translation of trends for use by the greater Hallmark creative community and beyond. Project work on this unique team would include visual translation of key trends into assets for product application, linking with key product teams to apply trends assets, contributing to an internal trends magazine (print and digital), and contributing to our various social media platforms, including our blog, http://www.thinkmakeshareblog.com/. We are looking for someone who has social media experience, coupled with a passion for color, fashion, research, an outstanding aesthetic and a strong design skill set.
ILLUSTRATOR, ILLUSTRATION STUDIO
As an illustrator in Hallmark's Illustration Studio, you'll have the opportunity to create original illustrations for a variety of different 2D and 3D consumer product formats including greeting cards, books, gift presentation, gift collections, websites, and more! You will work alongside renowned Hallmark illustrators and designers to create distinctive concepts and imagery that deliver against consumer insight driven strategies. We are most interested in candidates who have a unique and differentiated style, but who also offer a flexible range of styles and can contribute in a wide variety of ways.

Your resume and portfolio will stand out if you have:
- Portfolio images that demonstrate strong conceptual/design skills, trend-focused color palettes, excellent aesthetic judgment, and use of type.
- Portfolio images that demonstrate hand-drawn lettering, innovative typographic solutions, or hand-drawn fonts as part of strong design solutions.
- Portfolio images that demonstrate strong illustration skills with a variety of techniques, styles, subject matter, and application.
- Portfolio images that demonstrate ability to apply design and illustration to multiple formats and products.
- Portfolio images that demonstrate any additional maker skills (such as high-end paper craft, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, using a laser cutter, hand embossing, sewing, etc.
- Portfolio images that demonstrate any additional creative and/or technical skills (interactive design skills, web design skills, 3D design skills, concept sketching skills, etc.).
- An eye for trends, including a strong color and fashion sense.
- Self-starter, curious, and willing to learn.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Prior internship experience.
- All internships will be at the Hallmark Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. This internship will occur summer of 2018 from May 20th to August 9th (dates may be flexible to accommodate conflicting school calendars).
