FSC 3210: Fire Dynamics


The course provides an introduction to advanced fire behavior and combustion concepts. Assignments and discussions will focus on real world applications and principles of fire dynamics and chemistry.


  1. Explain the flame spread and smoke production properties of building furnishings and materials.
  2. Explain the process of flame spread over solid and liquid fuels including variables that affect flame spread rate.
  3. Analyze building structural components for fire endurance and fire resistance.
  4. Calculate the temperature, velocity, and mass flow rate of a fire plume.
  5. Differentiate the difference between diffusion flames and premixed flames.
  6. Describe the effects of visibility in smoke, the toxicity of smoke, and the amount of smoke produced by a fire.
  7. Explain what smoke is and the dangers of smoke.
  8. Estimate a fire’s heat release rate using the time squared method and the heat release rate needed for flashover.
  9. Calculate flame height, thermal radiation from a flame, viewing distance in smoke, and the filling rate of smoke in a space.
  10. Describe the ignition and fire growth process given a specific fuel type and form.
  11. Demonstrate the importance and be able to calculate heat release rate for combustibles.
  12. Explain the impact of walls and corners on flames and plumes, and the structure of buoyant plumes and ceiling jets.
