Please read all of the following information carefully:

HOUSING CONTRACT: Housing contracts are updated each year and they provide students the most comprehensive overview of the policies and procedures associated with living on campus. Incoming freshmen will be asked to sign their contract when they arrive on campus. Signed copies for students will be made if requested. Returning students sign their contract during the housing selection process in the spring semester. Signed copies are provided to those students in the fall if requested. Please read all the information provided in the contract carefully. To view a copy of the most recent housing contract, please visit our main Residence Life webpage and click the tab entitled Housing Contract.

HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS: Housing assignment letters are sent to students towards the end of July. These letters contain as much information as possible concerning the student’s room, meal plan, parking permit, and mailbox for the fall semester. In addition, these assignment letters provide students with information concerning their roommate and all the subsequent contact information to provide students the opportunity to contact each other before the semester begins.

DAMAGE DEPOSIT: In order to secure your space in the residence halls, please mail your $125 Housing Damage Deposit as soon as possible to: Waldorf College Business Office, Attn: Housing Damage Deposit, 106 S 6th Street, Forest City, Iowa 50436. Please include the student’s name on the check or money order. The Housing Damage Deposit is separate from the $100 tuition deposit. The Damage Deposit is held in the student account to cover any damage charges that the student does not pay once the end-of the-year billing is sent. Damage Deposits are refundable within a few weeks after the time you check out of the residence hall. If damages or other charges are incurred by the student or unknown persons in the student’s room or on their floor/residence hall, this amount will be taken from the Damage Deposit. The College has a policy of charging a pro-rated amount to all residents for unnecessary damages that may occur on floors or in common areas of the residence halls made by unidentified persons . The residence halls are operated on a self-sustaining basis with no provision in the budget for the cost of materials and labor to repair undue damage. However, no charges are levied against students for the normal or expected wear and tear on facilities, furnishings, or equipment. Whenever possible, Waldorf College prefers to charge unnecessary damage costs directly to the student(s) responsible. Thus, we encourage all students to take an active role in discouraging careless or destructive behavior in their rooms, on their floors and in their residence halls.

ITEMS FURNISHED BY THE COLLEGE: For all the traditional residence halls on campus, the College provides a bed, dresser, closet, drapes, and a desk and chair set. In addition, coin operated washers and dryers are located in every residence hall and a limited number of telephones that can be checked out on a first come first served basis. The Waldorf Bookstore carries various phone cards that students can purchase and use for long distance calling. Waldorf College also provides Cable TV service (included in room/board costs) in each residence hall room, but students are responsible for providing the cable cord (standard coax cable with male RF connectors on each end) that connects from the TV to the wall connection. This cable may be purchased at the College Bookstore if unable to bring from home.

WHAT TO BRING: Pillows, sheets, blankets, bedspread for a standard size twin bed (only Breen Hall beds are extra long). Small appliances/equipment such as clocks, radios, televisions, stereos, small microwaves, and refrigerators (no larger than three feet in height) are allowed in your room. Maximum one refrigerator allowed per room.

WHAT NOT TO BRING: Halogen lamps, water beds, hot plates, candles or any appliances with an exposed heating element are forbidden because of fire code regulations. Window air conditioners are not allowed. If a medical doctor verifies that one is required for a severe asthmatic/allergenic condition, the student needs to provide such information to the Director of Residence Life for appropriate placement.

MEAL PLANS: All resident students are required to be on one of the various meal plans offered by the College. All incoming freshmen are automatically placed on the premium meal plan for their first semester (19 meals per week with $50 flex money). After the first semester, freshmen may choose to stay on this plan or switch to the basic (150 meals per semester with $150 flex money) or economy option (9 meal per week with $200 flex money). All other students may choose any of the various options for the plan that best serve their needs. Meals and flex dollars may be at all dining venues on campus, including the main cafeteria, Walbucks, Java City , and Gatsby’s. If a student has special dietary concerns that cannot be met by the options offered across campus an appeal must be made to the Director of Residence Life for permission to have his/her meal plan waived.

ARRIVAL TO CAMPUS: Freshmen students who attended the Summer Orientation must arrive on Friday, August 24, 2007. Returning students are to arrive on Sunday, August 26, 2007. Incoming transfer students have the option of arriving on Friday, August 24 or Sunday, August 26 and may choose to take part in any orientation sessions offered throughout this time. Students participating in school-sponsored camps and/or fall sports are allowed to arrive on the assigned arrival date for their organization. To ensure the College enough time needed to prepare all residence hall rooms and buildings, it is very important that students arrive on their scheduled day. Approval for an earlier arrival day may be obtained only under certain circumstances and only by contacting the Director of Residence Life for permission. A $20/day fee may apply. Unless you have been approved for an earlier arrival, please do not try to move in before your scheduled time as there is a $35.00 per day charge for an unapproved arrival.

ROOM KEYS: After checking in when you arrive, you will receive your room key from your hall staff. Upon arriving on campus, please make sure you stop in to the Business Office to settle and/or verify all financial information and completed transactions in preparation for the fall semester.

CARPETING: With the exception of Breen Hall and Timberland @ the Village Apartments, all residence hall rooms are uncarpeted. For most rooms, an area rug will provide adequate floor covering. However, student are allowed the option to fully carpet their rooms. Carpet is not to be secured to the floor with carpet tape. The following dimensions have been measured for all rooms regarding proper carpet placement with the exception of Ormseth Hall, which has a few different room sizes. Johnson/London Hall rooms measure 14' x 6'1/2" which does not include the additional three feet of the room occupied by the built-in bed units, which should not be removed. Tanner Hall rooms measure 14' x 9' which includes the floor space under the beds. Rasmusson Hall rooms measure 13' x 10' which includes floor space under the beds. Students may contact the Admissions Office on campus to make arrangement to view a room to take proper measurements.

LOFTS: Waldorf College has partnered with Campus Lofts, Inc. to offer students loft and futon options for individual rooms. Due to room dimension constrictions, lofts purchased from the company are not allowed in Johnson/London Hall and Breen Hall. Flyers about the products are included in the housing assignment letters sent to students during the summer. If a purchase is made, students are responsible for transporting the lofts to their rooms from the designated storage site on campus as well as assembling all parts of the loft. In addition to the measurements noted above, most residence hall rooms have a ceiling to floor measurement ranging from 8’ to 8’6”. Students may contact the Admissions Office to make arrangements to view a room in order to take exact measurements. If students choose to build their own lofts, the following guidelines must be followed: 1. Lofts should be free standing and cannot be affixed to any furniture or part of the room, walls, or closets. 2. There must be adequate room for the student to sit without bumping his/her head on the ceiling. 3. A safe, secure ladder should be attached. 4. Lofts are not allowed to be stored during the summer on campus. 6. All lofts must be checked by the Hall Director to make sure everything is in compliance. For students living in Tanner Hall, the following conditions also apply: 1. Lofts may touch, but not rest their weight on the book shelves, lights, or desks. 2. There must be a wooden 4x4 secured in each corner of the loft supporting the weight of the loft to the floor.

STORAGE: Each residence hall has a small area designated for storage of travel bags, suitcases, and/or certain furniture. Due to fire codes, the College is unable to allow empty boxes and lumber from lofts to be stored in these areas and all hallways must be clear of all belongings and boxes on each floor. Storage is primarily available for International students and out-of-state students traveling from long distances and these students are allowed to make special arrangements to store belongings in the summer months. All students may store a limited amount of belongings during the summer months for a fee to be determined by the Residence Life staff. During the school year, students must make contact with their Residence Hall Director as soon as possible to make these arrangements as the College is not able to guarantee storage space for all students, especially for carpeting, large items, or furniture. Each item placed in storage must be properly packaged and labeled, the student’s name and room number must be on each item stored. Please be selective about what you bring to campus and realize you are responsible for taking all your possessions home at the end of your academic year, if arrangements are not made to keep any in storage.
