Chemical Spills/Chemical Fires
If a Chemical Spill Occurs:
- If toxic chemicals contact your skin, immediately flush the affected area with clear water for 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing.
- Call 9-911 immediately.
- Always err on the side of safety and if there is any possible danger, evacuate the area.
If a Chemical Fire Occurs:
- Remain Calm. Call 9-911 immediately.
- If the fire is small, you are not exposed to its fumes, and you have received proper training, attempt to put it out with a proper fire extinguisher.
- Never allow the fire to come between you and an exit.
- Evacuate your area if you are unable to put out the fire. Close doors and windows behind you to confine the fire. Proceed to the nearest exit.
- Do not break windows. Oxygen feeds fires. Only break windows as a last resort.
- Do not attempt to save possessions at the risk of personal injury.
- Do not return to the emergency area until instructed to do so by Police or Fire Department officials.
- All chemical spills and fires, no matter how small, should be reported to 9-911.
