MLK Day Results
To kick off the Waldorf College 50 Days of Service, RSVP of North
Central Iowa partnered with Waldorf to offer the 2nd annual Day
of Service on Jan. 21st, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Volunteers
packaged meals for seven hours through Kids Against Hunger, a volunteer-driven
international food relief campaign that distributes food in communities
worldwide where hunger and starvation are rampant.
More 400 volunteers—including teams from TSB Bank, MBT,
Rotary, youth groups from Immanuel Lutheran, the United Methodist
Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City, students
from Waldorf, Forest City Middle & High School and several
area families—packaged 62,557 meals that were sent to orphanages
in Tanzania.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the response from the
whole community,” said Mary Graham, RSVP Marketing Coordinator
who helped organize the event.
The event was sponsored by RSVP, Waldorf College Student Senate,
3M, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, the John K & Luise V
Hanson Foundation and TSB. Other donations were received from the
Forest City High School Student Council, Forest City Middle School
, Rotary and American Legion Auxiliary Post 121.
More than 80 people from Waldorf and the community attended a
Hunger Banquet on Jan. 17 th. As the participants entered the Atrium,
they were given a ticket that determined their class which represented
the world. Sixty percent were in the “poor” class,
which meant they sat on the floor and ate rice with no utensils.
Twenty-five percent represented the middle class and were given
rice and beans at a plain table. Just 15 percent represented the “rich” which
meant they dined on a three-course meal. This event reflected hunger
in the world.
In addition, Waldorf College sophomore Lutheran Leader Lucy Killewo—who’s
from Tanzania —also spoke. Aramark graciously sponsored this
event.
Two Waldorf College interns—Angela Boris and Amanda Weiss—helped
organize both of these successful events.
