Wilkins receives recognition for poetry book

Professor Joe WilkinsAssociate Professor Joe Wilkins's book of poems Killing the Murnion Dogs was recently named a finalist for the 2012 Paterson Poetry Prize, one of the premier post-publication book prizes in the nation. In the spring of 2013, he'll read with winner Dorianne Laux and fellow finalists Wanda Coleman, Martin Espada, Rachel Richardson, and Jason Schossler at Passaic Community College in Paterson, New Jersey.

Killing the Murnion Dogs is also a current finalist for the High Plains Book Award in Poetry, for the best book of poetry about or from the High Plains states. Wilkins is up against luminaries like Jim Harrison, author of Legends of the Fall, and Nebraska Book Award-winning Twyla Hansen.

Wilkins was also chosen as the recipient of the 2015 Boyden Wilderness Residency Fellowship. Along with his family, he'll spend the summer of 2015 in a remote cabin in the Rogue River Wilderness of southwestern Oregon.
