Waldorf College turns the beat around: Two ensembles add rhythm to campus

Waldorf College
Waldorf College students and regional musical enthusiasts now have more performance opportunities with DrumLine Battle™ and Drum Corps International’s new SoundSport® program. Both ensembles will rehearse on the Waldorf campus and utilize modern technology to compete virtually with similar groups all over the world. Both DrumLine Battle™ and SoundSport® are open to college students and community members alike.

Drum Corps International (DCI) announced the new programs in January 2013. “This is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor,” said Chris Ward, Music/Percussion Coordinator for Waldorf College. “Drum Corps International has worldwide prestige, and these new programs will allow more groups than ever to perform and compete.”

DrumLine Battle™ participants use any percussion instrument that can be carried, which includes non-traditional elements like garbage cans and construction helmets. “We’ll have theatrical elements like in  ‘Stomp’ and ‘Blast,’” said Ward, “with music custom-written for the ensemble.” The DrumLine Battle™ ensemble is limited to 31 participants or less. DrumLine Battle™ will compete in the fall.

There is an informational meeting for those interested in DrumLine Battle™ on Monday, August 26 at 7pm in the Rehearsal Room in the Odvin Hagen Music Building at Waldorf College. The group will perform in virtual competitions and at Waldorf’s Homecoming celebration on November 2.

SoundSport® showcases ensembles of any instrumentation and skill level, and is ideal for anyone interested in fun, artistic and theatrical performance. “Our SoundSport events will be designed to engage many facets of artistry in performing,” said Dr. Joshua Thompson, Director of Instrumental Activities at Waldorf College. “Motion, drama, and theatrics will complement musical expression and technique.” This ensemble will perform and compete virtually in the winter. There will be an information meeting for SoundSport® on Sunday, November 24 at 3pm in the Rehearsal Room.

Drum Corps International is enthusiastic about the new programs. “We are focused on creating dynamic opportunities for vast new audiences to engage with our organization and the positive values it represents,” said DCI’s John De Novi. “Our goal is to create another avenue to unite the world through music and performance, to promote teamwork and the pursuit of excellence, and to have a heck of a lot of fun in the process.”
