Forest City, Iowa – After a successful year of collecting over 500 pairs of shoes for the less fortunate, Waldorf College will continue its rich tradition of community service by expanding the Soles4Souls program further into the Forest City area.
Brett Geelan, intramural and recreation coordinator at Waldorf College, launched this charity project that donates shoes to children and adults shortly after joining the college last summer. Collection boxes placed in the Waldorf community, Immanuel Lutheran Church and the YMCA brought in 575 pairs of shoes throughout the 2011-2012 academic year, exceeding the goal of 500 pairs. The donated shoes will go to Village Northwest Unlimited, a donation-processing center for Soles4Souls located in Sheldon, Iowa.
“I got the idea when I was at my last job at a Catholic Church, where they did the Sole4Souls program,” said Geelan. “Through this program, people can get rid of their old shoes and help others who really need them.”
This program will be expanded to churches, clinics and small businesses in the area with a goal of collecting about 700 pairs of shoes for the next academic year.
