Forest City, Iowa – In the months leading up to March, Waldorf College will see scores of fifth and sixth graders lining up in the library with their history books. As National History Day contest gets closer, Waldorf history majors and faculty are collaborating with area public schools to work on a variety of history projects.
A nationally recognized event, National History Day started back in the 1970s to promote the history education in schools.
“School kids research a topic in history, using primary and secondary sources and develop a project that may include a performance, website, reports or display boards,” said Dr. James Scarry, assistant professor of history at Waldorf College.
The theme for this year’s history day is “reform, reaction and revolution.” Sixth graders from the Garner Hayfield Community School District’s Talented and Gifted Program gathered in Waldorf’s Hanson Library last month to work with Waldorf students on wide-ranging projects. Some of these projects included a performance on Beatles, a written project on George Washington Carver, the Wright Brothers and the discovery of penicillin. Waldorf students and professors help these students with their research and the library provides them with resources that they don’t usually have access to in their own schools.
“This event helps our students process what they have been learning and apply it methodically,” said Dr. Scarry who is hosting the history day invasion at Waldorf for the second consecutive year. “On the other hand, school kids get great exposure in the area of history from us.”
Waldorf College will participate in the preliminary judging of written projects submitted by the area students, which will be held in March at the Area Education Agency in Clear Lake. Selected projects will then compete in Des Moines and the best will then move on to the national level competition.
