Theater and music students will have the opportunity to experience Waldorf College, a four-year liberal arts school, and to audition for scholarships during the Fine Arts Weekend events at the college during February and March.
Scholarships of at least $1,000 will be available to new students and transfer students in instrumental music, piano, vocal music and theater during the free events Feb. 18-19 and March 18-19. Scholarships will apply to the 2011-12 Waldorf academic year and can be renewed each year if theater and music students maintain at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Music scholarship recipients also must maintain a B average in ensemble and music lessons or classes.
Fine Arts Weekend serves as an opportunity for prospective students who are interested in fine arts to get a first-hand look at college life at Waldorf, said Amy McGinnis, music office coordinator. The two-day events allow students to tour the campus, attend fine arts classes, meet students and faculty and participate in ensemble rehearsals and workshops. Students will receive free housing and meals during their visit.
The Fine Arts Weekend on Feb. 18-19 will coincide with the presentation of the play “Kiss Me Kate,” which runs Feb. 16-19. A coproduction of the Waldorf Theatre and Music departments, the comedy will allow faculty and students to showcase their respective departments.
“We will do tours of the theater and meet cast members, and students who stay for the play will be our guests,” said Robert AuFrance, associate professor of the Waldorf Theatre Department . Students must participate in a Waldorf music ensemble to be eligible for a music scholarship. The Waldorf College Theatre Department is an open department, which means that all students are eligible to apply and audition for cast, crew and administrative positions regardless of their major, minor or class placement. And, as an open department, students are allowed to apply for scholarships without being required to become theater majors or minors (although there is a premium for being a theater major or minor).
