Runners and their pets are invited to participate in the 3K3 Run/Walk/Wag at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 18 at Waldorf College.
The fifth annual event, a fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society, features three 3-kilometer routes that each begin in the parking lot at Hanson Fieldhouse on the Waldorf campus. The cost of registration for the event is $10 for students of any age, and $15 for adults.
The event was started by three Waldorf employees named Kristi: Kristi Carlson, associate professor of art; Kristi Leonard, assistant professor of wellness; and Kristi Osheim, administrative assistant in the Athletics Department. The trio wanted to do a service project and built the theme around the three Ks of their first names and came up with the idea of a 3K run.
“We decided that wasn’t far enough for some participants, so we multiplied it by three by offering three loops, each 3K in length, for a total run of up to 9K,” Osheim said.
Participants may choose to walk or run one loop (1.86 miles), two loops (3.72 miles) or all three loops (5.58 miles) along with their dogs or other pets, the wag portion of the event.
Family members of the late Charlotte Fredrickson will serve as the honorary starters for the run/walk. Fredrickson, who worked 19 years in the Waldorf Music Department, died in January after a short battle with cancer.
“There are many on staff still who worked with her,” Osheim said. “She has Waldorf alumni all over the country who think of her as ‘mom’ to the Music Department. She truly touched the lives of many.”
To receive a T-shirt, participants must register no later than April 12. Registration forms are available at the Waldorf Athletic Department on the second floor of Hanson Fieldhouse or by calling (641) 585-8782. Forms also can be downloaded from the website.
