The Gay-Straight Alliance at Waldorf College received the award, “Best College GSA” from the Iowa Pride Network for the second consecutive year.  The annual award recognizes Iowa’s best LGBT student organizations that have shown a committed effort to raise awareness of LGBT issues on their campus and in their communities; and have pioneered programs that have increased the respect for all people.

Serving her second year as the GSA president, junior Jessica Schiermeister said, “It was surprising to get it again.  It is an honor to have our work rewarded, especially statewide.”  To apply for the award, the group submitted examples of their activity from the past year, including photographs, posters, emails, and videos.

Several members of the Waldorf GSA attended the Iowa Pride Network’s Spring Soirée Honors Ceremony in Des Moines on April 29 to accept the award.

“The Waldorf GSA has become a prominent and respected organization on campus,” Dr. Paul Bartelt, professor of biology and advisor to the GSA, said. “It has accomplished this through a series of effective educational efforts, friendly dialogue with students and the general campus community, and just plain courage.”

Bartelt said the “spark plug” for the Waldorf GSA has been its president, Jessica Schiermeister, calling her, “an absolute dynamo.”

“What I think is a real testament to the group’s title, mission, and message is the mix of its members, both heterosexual and homosexual; …by their example, the message of ‘homosexual rights’ is being transformed into its real message, that of ‘human rights,’” he said.

The Iowa Pride Network is dedicated to helping Iowa's LGBT students build successful futures by providing resources and support to help Iowa college and high school students and organizations succeed.

Located in Forest City, Iowa, Waldorf is a four-year, liberal arts college that delivers engaging experiences through innovative classroom instruction. The college offers residential and hybrid online bachelor’s degree programs including business, communication, music, psychology, theatre, education, fire science administration, criminal justice administration and more.
