Sailor of the Year Scholarship

Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (SW/AW) Ingrid J. Cortez (Fleet Forces Sailor of the Year) – A native of Ecuador, Cortez enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1995. As of 2009, Cortez served aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5).

Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class (SW) Cassandra Foote (Chief of Naval Operations Sailor of the Year) - Foote enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 2001. As of 2009, Foote served as an LPO at the Center for Information Dominance Det. Corry Station.

Operations Specialist 1st Class (SW) Samira McBride (Pacific Fleet Sea Sailor of the Year) - A native of Chad, Africa, McBride enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1999. McBride said the manner in which the Navy has prepared her for the leadership role she will now hold has changed her perspective on personal interaction. “The Navy has humbled me,” she said. “I’ve become less focused on myself and more understanding and respectful of individuals who have come before me. I’ve definitely matured, and the Navy has a lot to do with that growth.”

Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (SCW) Shalanda L. Brewer (Navy Reserve Sailor of the Year) – Brewer enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1999. Brewer attributes her success to role models she observed while a junior Sailor, and said the opportunities for service members wishing to further their careers exist through adhering to the Navy core values.
