Dr. van Gaalen has over 6 years private sector experience (including expert witness trial experience), 7 years academic and research experience (classroom and course development), with recent publications in binary raster, lidar, time series analysis, hydrology, and coastal systems.

Dr. van Gaalen has served aboard four research vessels in his career which include stints aboard the R/V Bellows, R/V F.G. Walton Smith, R/V Pelican, and R/V Suncoaster. Later, he spent time in New Zealand working with their National Institute for Water & Atmospheric Research on beach morphology investigations which produced a series of publications in the Journal of Coastal Research, Geomorphology, and EOS. Dr. van Gaalen is also fluent in over 20 different analytical program languages spanning groundwater, coastal, and geophysical research platforms of which some of his codes are featured in his publications.
