Melissa Phillips, B.M.E.
Adjunct Instructor of Piano

B.M.E. with piano emphasis, Wartburg College


Born and raised in North Central Iowa on a farm near Forest City, Melissa began piano lessons at the age of six. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Bethel College in St. Paul, MN, for two years then Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, where she graduated with a Bachelor's of Music Education with a piano emphasis.

During her pre-college and college years, she focused on piano through competitions, recitals, playing for special events, and much accompanying, including being a principle accompanist in the Bethel and Wartburg choirs. After graduating from Wartburg in 1991, Melissa started teaching for Children's Yamaha Music School as both a private and group teacher.

She is currently an Adjunct Professor of Piano at Waldorf, where she teaches and accompanies students. Melissa also instructs students of various ages in the community through her private piano studio and is a member of the Iowa Music Teachers Association.

Since 2000, Melissa has served as a Yamaha Music Education Specialist. In that role, she has helped conduct and teach Yamaha seminars in California and locally, as well as contributed articles for a couple of Yamaha publications. In addition, she has maintained her role by observing and evaluating videos of new Yamaha teachers as part of their certification process.
