Piano Proficiency Exam
All music majors need to pass a 6-part keyboard proficiency examination. It must be taken no later than the end of the fourth semester of piano study.
Applications, completely filled out and signed by the piano teacher and the student, are due in the Music Office thirty days prior to the exam. These exams will generally be offered at the same time as keyboard juries. Failed portions of the examination may be retaken no earlier than the following semester. There is no fee for the initial testing. Only one retake per semester is allowed. A fee of $25.00 will be charged for every retake, and will be added to your individual account. Students are required to take either Class Piano or Applied Piano until they can successfully complete this exam. The specific requirements are available in the Music Office and from the piano teachers.
Pianos and Practice Rooms - Smoking, Food and Drink
Pianos in the practice rooms, class rooms, Rehearsal Room, and Recital Hall should be treated with respect. They may not be moved from their location without the consent of a faculty member.
A weekly schedule is posted on each practice room door. Students may reserve a weekly time by signing up on the schedule. Other students may use the room at that time, if the person on the schedule does not.
Personal items may not be left in the practice rooms.
The Hagen Music Building is a smoke-free building and neither food nor drink should be brought into a class room, practice room, the Rehearsal Room or Recital Hall. At no time should ANY liquid be placed on any piano.
Professionalism
Waldorf College has a rich tradition of excellence. Students are encouraged to maintain a spirit of professionalism as they individually strive to meet their goals, both in Christian character and in performance excellence.
Recitals
General student recitals are scheduled each semester. Students studying privately are encouraged to participate. All music majors taking applied lessons are expected to perform in at least one general recital each year, unless advised otherwise by their instructor.
All vocal and piano literature must be memorized.
The various majors offered by the Music Department may require Junior and/ orSenior recitals.
To schedule a recital an application form must be submitted to the music faculty by the end of the first week of classes in the semester the recital will be presented.
All forms are available in the Music Office.
Presentation of any recital requires a pre-recital review with the music faculty which must take place not less than two weeks prior to the recital. It is the student's responsibility to schedule the recital and preview in the Music Office.
T he recital will be graded by the faculty.
In addition to standard accompanist fees, an additional recital fee of $40.00 will be added to each student’s account.
Receptions are the responsibility of the performer. Please make these arrangements known to the Music Office at least one month prior to your recital.
Notes:
Vocal accompanists are already paid for. The vocal students have been billed by the college. The only time a vocal accompanist needs to be paid directly is if they play for something not school related, such as NATS, graduate school auditions, etc. The only exception to this is if a vocal student is giving a solo recital.
Instrumental students are NOT billed by the college, as not all instrumental students use an accompanist. If the student DOES need an accompanist for a recital, etc., they need to pay for the services of the pianist. The prices are as follows: Mrs. Farndale and Mrs. Stadtlander, $20 an hour; Student accompanists, $10 an hour. The time billed would be playing for the student’s lesson, practice time outside of the recital or lesson, and the recital itself.
For those students giving a solo recital- these same fee rates apply. Instrumental students, you need to add up all of the time spent with the accompanist and pay according to the above rates. Vocal students, you need to add up the time for recital run through and recital (plus any above and beyond the call of duty practicing) and pay according to the above rates.
Recital Attendance
Music majors and minors are required to attend ten concerts or recitals (WCAS events, general student recitals, faculty recitals, guest recitals, ensemble concerts - Wind Symphony, Jazz Band Waldorf Choir, Sangkor or off-campus events at the discretion of the applied area coordinator) per semester. Except for general recitals, events in which the student participates cannot be counted.
Applied lessons students and voice class students not majoring or minoring in music are required to attend WCAS events of their own area of study (instrumentalists must attend instrumental concerts, voice students must attend vocal events), faculty recitals, and general student recitals.
Attendance will be taken at each event by a designated work-study student. It is each student’s responsibility that his/her attendance be recorded. Failure to fulfill the attendance requirement will lower the applied lessons grade by one-half letter grade
Studio Classes
All students enrolled in private piano or voice lessons are required to attend studio class, Piano, 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Recital Hall. Voice, 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. on Thursdays. The rooms for voice studio classes will be assigned later. All schedule conflicts with studio class must be pre-approved by the instructor.
Tours
Each year, The Waldorf Choir and The Waldorf Wind Symphony perform off campus. A major tour is scheduled each year.
At times some expense is required of the members for the tour.
All members of the touring ensemble are expected to participate in the tour. Failure to participate in a tour may result in loss of the member’s Special Ability Award.
Through fund-raising activities, a concerted effort is made to offset some of the costs to help individuals with substantial financial need. If flying is necessary for the tour, the cost of the airfare will be billed to the student’s account at the Business Office.
Proper tour attire will be required of all students. Guidelines for tour attire will be outlined in the course syllabi.
Work Study
A limited amount of work study funding is available for the Music Department. If you are interested, contact the Music Office. Work study is a privilege and those selected for work study must maintain regular hours and exhibit quality work standards to retain their position.
