Sample Questions to Ask the Employer

The interviewer will expect you to have questions for him/her. If you have no questions about the position or company, the employer assumes that you lack interest.

May I see a copy of the job description?

Why has the job become available?

What is a typical day like in this position?

What do you consider the 3 most important day-to-day responsibilities of this job?

What types of people seem to do well in this department/organization?

What type of supervision would I receive in this position?

What do you see as the strengths of the department?

What are the company’s short- and long-range objectives?

What is the single biggest problem facing the organization now?

Does the _______________________ department work in teams or individually?

Why have you enjoyed working for this organization?

What opportunities exist for advancement?

Does this organization encourage personal and professional growth? How?

How often are performance reviews given and how are they conducted?

What are the company’s values? How are the company’s values reflected in everyday activities?

When will you make your selection?

Questions regarding salary and fringe benefits are inappropriate during the initial screening interview. Both you and the interviewer are trying to determine if there is any interest. If there is, and a follow-up interview does take place, there will be ample time to discuss salary and fringe benefits.
