2008 Season Recap
The Waldorf College women’s soccer team enjoyed a successful
season in spite of numerous injuries which plagued the team before the
first game was played in late August. Finishing with an overall record
of five wins and twelve losses, the team of 18 women comprised of three
seniors, five juniors, six sophomores, and four freshmen experienced
formation altering mishaps on almost a game - to - game basis. By the
final game only 14 were able to suit up for the first ever Midwest Collegiate
Conference ( MCC ) playoff game at Waldorf.
The highlight of the season occurred when the women’s team won
their first conference game since 2005 defeating Iowa Wesleyan one goal
to nil. The spirited Waldorf ladies team finished in eighth place in
the MCC to host the playoff match against the visiting Iowa Wesleyan
Tigers who eventually prevailed in a close match in later October.
Notable players for the year include scorers freshman Tiffany McNelly
who netted ten goals to lead the Warriors in scoring; senior Jessica
Cable who had six goals and eight assists; and sophomore Britany Smith
who had three goals. Sophomore Kelly Dietrich as the Warrior goalkeeper
made 86 saves during the campaign. Notable defenders included freshman
Marcie O’Malia, junior Jayme Anderson, and junior Melissa Corkery.
Head coach Fabio dos Santos and assistant coach Boyd Longshore were
pleased with the level of effort given by the ladies despite the numerous
injuries throughout their first soccer season at Waldorf. Both plan to
build upon the experience gained by the younger players to field a highly
competitive team for next year and the years to come.
