2001 Hall of Fame Inductees

Elton Erdahl

A natural leader, Elton Erdahl grew up in Forest City, where he was a three-year varsity performer in both basketball and football at Forest City High School while also being voted senior class president.

Electing to further his education locally, Elton enrolled at Waldorf in the fall of 1948. He was a two-year letterman for the Warrior football team under Hall-of-Fame coach, Rolf Lund. Elton was elected captain his sophomore season.

On the hardcourt is where Erdahl really shined. He led Coach Lund's basketball squad in scoring both his freshman and sophomore seasons, amassing a career total of 716 points-which still ranks in the top twenty-five on Waldorf's all-time career scoring list.

Elton continued his education at Luther College, earning two varsity letters in basketball for the Norse.

He taught and coached in the Minnesota public school system for seven years before entering private business. He ended his employment career back in education working twenty-four years for the State of Minnesota Teachers Retirement Assocation-the last six as its Executive Director.

Elton, and wife, Orpha, are the parents of four and grandparents of six. They currently reside in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Jim Walker

After leading his Sumner High School basketball team to an undefeated regular season in his senior year, Jim Walker brought his size and skill to Waldorf College in the fall of 1976. His impact was felt immediately.

Jim averaged 18.1 points and 11.3 rebounds per game in leading the 1976-77 Warrior squad, setting the single-season rebounding record at 304 in the process. Jim followed that up by averaging 23.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in his sophomore season and establishing four new school records: career scoring (1071 points), single-game rebounds (25), single-season rebounds (307), and career rebounds (604). The single season and career rebound records remain today 23 years later, and Jim is currently second on Waldorf's all-time scoring list. His phenomenal play that season earned him First-team All Region XI honors, and Jim was named NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American-the first Waldorf basketball athlete to earn such distinction.

Following Waldorf, Jim continued his athletic career at South Dakota State University. His junior season he set the SDSU field goal percentage record of 58.1%, and was named to the North Central Conference first team. In the summer of 1979, he was selected as a South Dakota all-star to tour Australia.

Jim's senior year at SDSU was even more memorable. His squad won the regular season North Central Conference title, the NCC post-season tournament, and won the regional title to advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. At nationals, the Jackrabbits lost a quarter-final game to Florida Southern-the eventual NCAA champion.

Jim was once again named to the North Central Conference first team, and was voted most valuable player of the conference.

Jim's athletic career didn't end there, as he signed a two-year professional contract to play for the Tasmanian Devils of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. After one season, he retired to pursue a career in banking, where he is currently the Senior Vice President in charge of lending at McFarland State Bank in McFarland, Wisconsin.

Jim, and his wife, Michele, are the parents of three children: Tyler (15), Riley (12), and Kirsten (9).

Randy Rick

Randy Rick, a graduate of Dubuque Hempstead High School, enrolled at Waldorf College in the Fall of 1973. He immediately made his presence felt on the football field by earning a starting role on the Warrior defense. Rick played linebacker on the 1973 Waldorf squad that finished 5-4. He earned All-Region XI honors that season.

Rick's sophomore season was highlighted by a 6-2 upset of previously unbeaten and number-one ranked Iowa Central Community College. The Warriors finished 8-2 that season and, spearheaded by linebacker Randy Rick, led the nation in total defense. Rick was voted by league coaches as the conference most valuable player, and was named National Junior College Athletic Association First-Team All-American.

Rick continued his athletic career at the University of Nebraska, where he earned two varsity letters for the national-powerhouse Cornhuskers. While finishing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Nebraska, he helped coach the Cornhusker freshman team to an undefeated season in 1978.

Mary Huinker-McEnaney

Fresh off a state high school basketball tournament appearance in 1977, Mary Huinker brought her softball and basketball talents to Waldorf College in the fall of 1977.

Going from one sport to the next, Mary's athletic career at Waldorf was a busy one. She played third-base and pitched for the Warrior softball team that went 13-5 and won the 1977 fall state title. As a starter on the 1977-78 women's basketball team, the squad went 26-8 and earned the College's first women's basketball national tournament berth. She finished the year by helping the Waldorf softball team to a national tournament appearance in the spring of 1978, and earning All-Region XI honors at third base.

Huinker's sophomore year was packed with many additional successes. The fall softball team finished 13-3, the women's basketball team went 25-4-narrowly missing another national tournament berth with a Regional Final loss to NIACC. The spring softball team earned a Regional title and a second consecutive national tournament appearance and finished the season with a 17-4 mark. Huinker again earned All-Region XI honors-and was the only unanimous choice of league coaches.

The teams Mary Huinker played on in her two years at Waldorf had a combined won-loss record of 114-31.

Huinker had a career .339 batting average for the Warriors with 7 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs and 45 RBI's. She also went 8-3 on the mound as a pitcher her freshman season.

As head coach, Denny Jerome's defensive specialist, Huinker ranks fifth on Waldorf's all-time steals list with 165 and is fifteenth on the all-time blocked shots list.

Mary continued her athletic career at Luther College where she played both softball and basketball. She had a career batting average of .351 with 8 homers and 48 RBI's while helping the Norse to a fifth-place finish at the 1981 AIAW National Softball Tournament. She also still ranks in the top-thirty on Luther's basketball all-time rebounding list, and in the top-fifty all-time scorers.

Now living in Ossian, Iowa, Mary is the owner of South Winn Insurance Services Limited in Calmar. She and husband, Tom, have two children: Angela (15), and Stephanie (12).
