SOC 161 Introduction to Community Service (1 cr.)
An introduction to the various areas of the helping professions. Included are visits to centers that employ people, campus visits by leaders, and reading and discussion of the helping professions. No prerequisite.
SOC 171 Criminal Law (3 cr.)
The philosophy and basis for law; the historical development and criminal law and procedure; the structure, definitions, and criminal laws of Iowa. (alternate academic)
SOC 221 Introduction to Sociology (3 cr.)
A study of the basic concepts and methods of sociology, of social laws and forces, and of the fundamental social institutions.
SOC 222 Social Problems (3 cr.)
An analytical study of selected social issues with emphasis on deviation from normative standards resulting in social disorganization. Issues to be covered include crime and delinquency, poverty, racism, sexism, prejudice, mental illness, and other social maladjustments. (Prerequisite: SOC 221)
SOC 232 Marriage and the Family (3 cr.)
The purpose of this course is to give the student a better understanding of marriage and family life. Discussion includes a picture of the family and its changing functions, personal relationships, and the selection of a marriage partner, problems in establishing a wholesome family unit, and various techniques used to enhance family life.
SOC 273 Criminal Evidence (3 cr.)
The kinds and degrees of evidence and the rules governing the admissibility of evidence in court. (alternate academic years)
SOC 276 Administration of Justice (3 cr.)
Arrest, search, and seizure: review of court systems; procedures from incident to final disposition; principles of constitutional, federal, state and civil laws as they apply to and affect law enforcement. (alternate academic years)
SOC 277 Criminal Investigation (3 cr.)
Crime scene investigation techniques including the importance of information, interrogation, and instrumentation in the solution and preparation of criminal cases for trial. (alternate academic years)
SOC 290 American Workplace (.5 cr.)
Experience as an employee in an off-campus American business or institution. Emphasis is on learning about the operations of American business and the expectations of workers in the American workplace. Approval is given jointly by the registrar and the student’s advisor after review of the student’s application for enrolling in the course. The on-site work supervisor will evaluate the student. P/F grade only. The course may be repeated.
