Humanities Department

The Humanities BA (HBA) is an interdisciplinary program. Students take courses in art, music, literature, humanities research, philosophy, religion, and history in addition to coursework in a particular area of concentration. Students may concentrate in a traditional area such as English literature or theology, or they may develop a cross-disciplinary concentration such as arts management or women's studies. Rather than training students in one narrow field of study, the HBA program offers a broad liberal arts education, focusing on developing critical thinking, writing skills, inquisitive minds, and expansive views of the intertwined nature of the various branches of humanities.

While some students in this program are preparing to continue their education in graduate or professional school in the fields of music, theatre, English, history, religion, etc., other HBA graduates directly enter positions in museums, theatres, music organizations, churches, publishing firms, higher education administrations, etc. ed courses in the major.

All HBA majors must complete a minor (20-24 credits) in a field of choice and complete HUM 301, HUM 302, one interdisciplinary or I-course, one semester of a foreign language, and their upper-division Religion elective of the core curriculum. HBA majors must also complete four courses in four different disciplines from the following choices: Art History (300-level or above), English (207 or above), History (300-level or above), Music History (300 or 330, with 301, 302, and 318 as possibilities with consent of instructor), Theatre History (315-330, 340, 385), or Philosophy (271, 272, 300). HBA majors must complete either a 6-9 credit Internship (HUM 495) or a thesis (HUM 497). Students completing a thesis must take an additional three credit class in one of the humanities disciplines or in their minor field.

A humanities minor (20-21 credits) requires the completion of HUM 301, HUM 302, and four courses in four different disciplines from the same choices listed above in the Humanities major with the addition of any foreign language course as one of those choices.

The bachelor's degree requires completion of 128 credits, a cumulative grade point average of 2.0, and a grade of C- or above in all required courses in the major.
