Definition:             The Wellness Intern, under the direct supervision of the Wellness Coordinator, is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of wellness programs targeting Cerro Gordo County employees, businesses, and community agencies.  The Wellness Intern will provide supervision of the Department’s fitness center, perform wellness related assessments, create and evaluate programs, and provide knowledge and motivation to encourage employees and patrons to make lasting healthy lifestyle choices.  The Wellness Intern may also assist the Wellness Coordinator with tasks coinciding with current wellness grant requirements and other wellness projects.

 

In addition, the intern will gain experience and knowledge in policy creation and implementation, fitness assessments, health risk appraisals, exercise prescription, lifestyle coaching, corporate wellness program development and implementation, presentation and promotional communications, and utilization of wellness software.

 

Experience Opportunities:

 

1. Assist in development of promotional programs to encourage involvement and participation in fitness
2. Organize, implement, supervise, and evaluate fitness/wellness programs to meet participants’ needs, interests, and abilities
3. Assist in development of needs assessment survey
4. Assist Wellness Coordinator in conducting health assessments, group and individual fitness orientations.
5. Maintain confidential records of participants
6. Assist in compilation of an employee worksite wellness packet detailing wellness program
7. Build positive relationship with participants and staff to reinforce the goals of employee wellness program
8. Contribute skills, knowledge to employee wellness newsletter by writing articles, creating program announcements, etc
9. Assist in development and conduction of wellness presentations and other communication methods to raise awareness of employee wellness efforts
10. Assist in development of incentive, motivational, and recognition programs to identify participant achievement and progress
11. Provide support and coaching to participants to encourage healthy behaviors
12. Provide participants periodic reminder calls or e-mails for important appointments or activities
13. Participate in Coalition or other community meetings.
14. Assist in compilation and creation of wellness policies.

 

Prerequisites:

 

1. Current enrollment in Exercise Science, Wellness, or Health related degree program
2. Basic knowledge in fitness testing and exercise prescription
3. Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support or CPR
4. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
5. Interest and enthusiasm for corporate wellness, health promotion, and/or personal training
6. Displays healthy lifestyle
