OBJECTIVE: To introduce new talent to Holmes Murphy & Associates and develop them through a formalized program of training and exposure to all aspects of HMA business.

OVERVIEW: The Intern Program is structured to last two years. Interns work the summers preferably after their sophomore and junior year of college. Upon graduation, the Intern participates in a structured, hands-on training program. On-going evaluations are completed to track the progress of the intern. If the intern is qualified for full-time employment, they may be placed in a position, depending upon skills and experience gained at HMA. Placement could be at any of our locations, so interns must be willing to relocate. Participation in Summer #1 does not guarantee continued participation in the program or full-time employment.

QUALIFICATIONS: • Students preferably in their sophomore or junior year of college, preferably pursuing a degree in business, finance or insurance. • Students will have demonstrated leadership and multi-activity participation throughout high school and college careers. • Students will show a genuine desire and interest in the field of insurance. • If hired upon graduation, students must agree to relocate to any HMA office, if requested.

PROGRAM SUMMER #1: Interns are placed with different coaches/departments throughout the summer, which introduces them to every aspect of our dynamic company. What skills will be developed? Networking: Exposure to all areas of insurance at our Des Moines location, including Property Casualty, Employee Benefits, Captives and Financial Services. Technical: Study of insurance specific topics, in addition to a summer-long project to develop a career development plan. Professional Development: Meet weekly for HMA Intern University to learn about company history, structure, core values and goals. Leadership: Participate in book club discussions held by leaders throughout the company. Teamwork: Organize Quarterly Sales Performance Meeting & Activity. Writing: Track experiences through weekly logs. Communication: Presentations to peer group & to Executive group at the end of the summer. Throughout the summer, those that worked with the intern offer feedback on the intern’s performance. Interns that successfully complete the program based on the potential for a future with HMA may be invited to return the following year for Summer #2.

SUMMER #2: Once again, the interns will be placed with different mentors/departments, this time rotating office locations. The coaches will have a written development plan of activities and expectations based on a higher level of learning and commitment from the student. During the summer, the intern will also spend time at Des Moines insurance companies to get an understanding of their job responsibilities and how they relate to Holmes Murphy’s business. The intern continues to record their experiences through a weekly log. Interns who successfully complete Summer #2 may be invited back after graduation.

AFTER GRADUATION: Upon graduation, selected interns return to HMA for a structured training program. At this point, technical knowledge is improved through industry-related classes and designations. They spend approximately six months learning all aspects of the insurance industry and HMA. Interns are also required to seek their insurance license, as well as applicable designations. Interns have an opportunity to express their desires for placement, and HMA leadership reviews the assessments and discusses options for placement. Interns could be required to relocate to another HMA office.

HOURS & COMPENSATION: Interns work full-time (38.75 hours per week) and are paid $12.00 per hour. Additional company benefits will be available upon graduation, if hired. Interns will be responsible for providing their own housing and transportation during Summer #1. During Summer #2, Holmes Murphy will provide travel, lodging, and meal stipends.
