Biography:

A native of Alexander City, Ala., Coach Robert Spain joined Waldorf’s soccer program as an Assistant Coach/Goalkeeper Coach during the 2010 season.

Before coming to Waldorf, Coach Spain was previously an Assistant Coach/Goalkeeper Coach for his high school alma mater, Benjamin Russell HS, and helped lead the Wildcats to two Alabama 5A State Final Fours during his tenure, including a berth in the 2006 Alabama 5A State Championship game.

Spain played collegiate soccer, alongside Coach Haynes who is also on the Waldorf soccer staff, at The University of Charleston under 2009 NSCAA/Mondo D-II National Coach of the Year Chad Duernberger. As a co-captain during his senior season, the Golden Eagles concluded the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an unblemished 12-0 conference record, including both a WVIAC regular season championship and a WVIAC tournament championship. Charleston also won the NCAA D-II Atlantic Regional, complete with a berth in the NCAA D-II National Quarterfinals, finishing with a No. 7 national ranking in the final NSCAA rankings with a 19-4 overall record.

Spain graduated with honors from the University of Charleston in 2010 with his Bachelors of Science in Sport Administration and was named the 2010 University of Charleston Male Sportsperson of the Year as well as the 2010 Jones Division of Business Outstanding Senior in Sport Administration. During his time at Charleston, Spain also was awarded the NCAA D-II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award and was placed on the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
