Biography:
Professor Smith's great academic passion is bringing the theology of Martin Luther to bear upon our modern life and world. He firmly believes Luther’s thought is extraordinarily poignant and useful for our time. Connected to this passion is Professor Smith’s commitment to helping students examine themselves in order to hear their many callings in life and to answer those calls well.

For certain official Waldorf events, he serves as campus pastor.

Professor Smith is also the assistant men’s hockey coach for the college.

Apart from the college, Professor Smith teaches in the Lay School of Ministry for the Western Iowa Synod, of the ELCA. In this program he has taught an introduction to the Bible and he is currently teaching basic Lutheran theology.

Playing hockey and being a violinist are other things Professor Smith is known for.

Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that education should transform people. Thus, I structure my courses to challenge traditional ways of thinking and ask my students to think in new ways, to see the world and their place in it in deeper ways. To facilitate such an educational experience, I believe it is vital for classes to not only involve discussions between the professor and students, but also a dialogue among students. Occasionally, I incorporate rather unorthodox activities in class to make a point or to make something memorable. I am also convinced that learning can be fun and that laughter enhances learning.
