FOREST CITY, IOWA – Waldorf College will be presenting the award-winning play “Steel Magnolias” April 2-5 in the Smith Theatre on campus.

Steel Magnolias is a story of a close-knit circle of friends who come together at Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in a small parish in modern-day Louisiana. Here they share each other’s tribulations and troubles. Steel Magnolias is a highly comedic and tragic production which Dr. Robert AuFrance, director of theatre, describes as a “three hanky show.” “One for showing, one for blowing, and one for wiping,” he said.

Many people know Steel Magnolias as a successful film, but it actually began as an Off-Broadway play written by Robert Harling.  Even though the film was successful, Dr. AuFrance encourages his cast and students not to watch it. “I would much rather see the students’ interpretation of the production rather than them mimicking someone else,” he said.  Dr. AuFrance encourages the community to experience Steel Magnolias as a stage production, because there are bound to be aspects not seen or felt from watching it on the big screen.

The cast list includes:

Shelby – played by Sydney Hutchison of Dallas, Texas; daughter of Troy and Rhonda Hutchison of Dallas, TX.
