The sound of drums and brass will again fill the air this fall as Forest City High School and Waldorf College host the High School Marching Band Invitational on Saturday, September 28.

In its second year, the invitational is an opportunity for local marching bands to improve their playing skills and marching techniques. “It’s a unique format in which the directors and the bands both get immediate feedback,” said Waldorf’s director of instrumental activities Dr. Josh Thompson. “I’ve never observed such a collaborative environment, where everyone works together to address how each group can become more effective and inspiring on the field.”

Seven area bands are bringing almost 400 students to Forest City for a day of clinics. “As a result of last year’s success, some recruiting, and positive word-of-mouth, the event has grown quickly,” said Forest City High School’s band director David Rutt. “It’s attracted a wide variety of schools, ranging in ability from novice to highly competitive.”

Waldorf’s music office coordinator Chris Ward added, “This is an excellent opportunity to support marching bands in the north Iowa area. The invitational is a positive learning environment and a chance for the bands to hone their skills.”

In addition to area band directors and instructors, staff from the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps of La Crosse, Wis., will provide performance feedback to each group. “Spending a two-hour block of quality time with the staff of a world-class drum corps such as the Blue Stars is an exciting opportunity for the bands,” said Rutt.

Both the Waldorf and Forest City High School football facilities will be utilized throughout the day as the groups work with clinicians. Bands will practice at Bolstorff Field from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., while the high school’s football field will be used from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The community is welcome to watch the clinics at either field. Concession stands will be open at both facilities throughout the day.

At 6:45 p.m., five of the seven participating bands will present a free exhibition performance for the public at the high school football field. A free-will donation will be collected with proceeds going toward fine arts activities in the Forest City schools.

Bands participating in the invitational represent school districts from the Northwood, Kensett, Lake Mills, Clear Lake, Charles City, Cresco, and Forest City communities.
