Forest City, IowaDr. Robert AuFrance will debut his original play Lawn Mower Wars as the opening show of Waldorf College’s 2012-2013 theatre season.

Lawn Mower Wars is set in small town Iowa but might as well be a small town anywhere in America,” AuFrance said about his comedy. “It deals with neighbors that are intrusive, people that sometimes try too hard, handymen who are constantly looking to make a dollar off of you, and the general craziness that happens in small towns.”

The play took roughly a year to write, with AuFrance still making slight modifications as rehearsals lead up to opening night on Sept. 26.

“In some ways it’s easier if you’re just the director because the script is the script and you can’t change anything,” AuFrance laughed. “When you’re the playwright as well as the director, you tend to take some directing time to firm up things you wish you had fixed during writing.”

The cast and crew consist of a blend of new students and upper classmen, three women and nine men, who have been working on a tight deadline to learn the piece.

“I’ve been very happy so far,” AuFrance said. “We’ve got a great cast, and it’s been exciting to see how far they’ve come in four short weeks.”

Lawn Mower Wars runs from Sept. 26-29 during homecoming weekend. Tickets for the show are available at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and non-Waldorf students, and $2 for Waldorf students.
