FOREST CITY, IOWA – Waldorf College will host two summer piano camps in July. The middle school camp will take place from July 20-23, and the high school camp will be from July 24-27. These summer camps are planned by Waldorf College associate professor of music and pianist Dr. Kristín Jónína Taylor.

This year’s camp theme is “Too cool for school,” focusing on compositions created by C.P.E. Bach and Jean Philippe Rameau – who were rebels of their time. “Many musicians felt they were not following the rules of how you’re supposed to write music,” Dr. Taylor said. “These two composers were huge innovators for not only the keyboard area, but also for music in general. Even popular music might not have been the same without them.”

Students will be able to learn from talented clinicians – Dr. Taylor, Rebecca Davis, Melissa Knudtson and Dr. Glen Wegge. Rebecca Davis is a concert pianist who took part in Waldorf’s Community Artist Series in the spring. “She gave a masterclass while she was here in February. It was one of the most remarkable masterclasses I’ve attended,” said Dr. Taylor.

Students who have attended Waldorf College’s summer piano camp have gone on to do well in piano competitions, but more importantly, have created life-long friendships with others who share their love of playing the piano. “Pianists are the ‘lone wolves’ of the music world, and so often we just work alone,” Dr. Taylor said. “Many lasting friendships happen at our camp, so that students can feel not so alone as pianists. “To further the importance of collaboration, students will also be assigned to play duets this year.

Students will participate in a variety of activities during this camp, both educational and social.  To attend, students must be a level B/C in the Iowa Teachers Association syllabus or using level 3+ lesson books. Registration for Waldorf College piano camp ends July 1. More information can be found at www.waldorf.edu/musiccamps, or by contacting Dr. Taylor at taylork@waldorf.edu with questions.
