Forest City, Iowa – A full-tuition scholarship from Waldorf College will allow Kevin Ansel to fulfill his passion of serving the country and participating in theatre.

A resident of Kanawha, Iowa, Ansel is one of the two recipients of the Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship, a program unique to Waldorf College. The Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship is awarded to spouses or children of active military or public safety personnel, a category that includes firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs and dispatchers. Ansel’s parents serve as EMTs and his father has been a volunteer firefighter in Hutchins, Iowa, for 11 years.

"Waldorf is proud to acknowledge and honor the families that stand behind our nation's heroes," said Waldorf College president Dr. Bob Alsop. “Behind any military or safety personnel are his or her family members. This scholarship is Waldorf’s way of recognizing those people,” said Duane Polsdofer, director of financial aid. “This is a way of giving back to their family, who have made sacrifices to allow their family members to serve the nation and the community.”

Ansel, 18 is relieved that he won’t have to worry about paying school loans after graduating from college. “It gives me a chance to further my career without having to worry or stress about being in debt,” he said. “I can focus on helping people, because that’s what I want to do.”

Ansel attended Clarion Goldfield High School, where he participated in many plays and musicals. He also competed in speech contests, reaching the state level.

“This scholarship gives me a reason to keep my grades up,” said Ansel, who plans to major in Criminal Justice Administration at Waldorf College. “I’m very excited about joining the criminal justice program.” In addition to his major, he is also interested in joining theatre at Waldorf.

Waldorf College has created the Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship to acknowledge the sacrifices made by first responders and our nation’s defenders. A total of ten scholarships are awarded to students every year, eight for online and two for residential. For residential students, the Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship works with other grants and scholarships to ensure tuition remission for a full four years or 128 semester hours, whichever comes first.

Residential applicants must also meet all regular Waldorf College admission requirements. Selected individuals must maintain a 3.0 overall GPA, remain in good standing and continue to be enrolled in a Waldorf degree program to maintain eligibility for the scholarship. Current Waldorf students require a 3.0 overall GPA to be considered.

In addition to meeting admission requirements, Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship applicants are also required to write an essay response to this question: “Explain how the opportunity to continue your education through the Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship Program would change your life.”
