Forest City, Iowa – In a ceremony that will mark an important point in the history of Waldorf College, Dr. Robert A. Alsop will be inaugurated as the 16th president on Friday, April 27. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the John K. and Luise V. Hanson Fieldhouse, followed by a reception at the YMCA in Forest City.
The ceremony will begin with an academic procession of robed faculty, members of the Board of Trustees, guests and two former Waldorf presidents, followed by a keynote speech in which the new president will share his vision for the college.
“It is a tremendous honor to lead an institution that is truly committed to educating the whole person,” said Dr. Alsop, who began his duties as the new president of the private, four-year college in September of 2011. While serving students remains the college’s central aim, Alsop’s vision for Waldorf College is to build on the college’s strengths in student-faculty interaction and supportive campus environment in this transformative era of higher education.
“Dr. Alsop is a great leader and is the right person to take Waldorf through this period of change and into its next chapter in history,” said Mr. Robert Mayes, CEO of Columbia Southern Education Group, Inc., which owns Waldorf College. “Because of his integrity and leadership ability, he has earned respect from staff and faculty at both CSU and Waldorf,” said Mr. Mayes.
The Rev. Buford Lipscomb, chair of the Board of Trustees, said Dr. Alsop excels because of his passion for Waldorf College and its mission. “The appointment of Dr. Alsop as the 16th president by the Waldorf Trustees will prove over time to have been a pivotal decision for the future success of Waldorf,” said the Rev. Lipscomb.
Dr. Alsop joined Waldorf College in 1998 after receiving a Ph.D. in English from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. During his tenure at Waldorf, Dr. Alsop has served in a variety of roles including Associate Professor of English, Chair of the English Department, Director of the Honors College, Assistant Academic Dean of the College, and most recently Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. A native of Duluth, Minn., Dr. Alsop also earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Concordia College in Moorhead in 1989, and a master’s degree in English from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Ill., in 1993.
The Waldorf College community, local dignitaries, and delegates from other universities and colleges will attend the event. Adding to the ceremony will be performances by the Waldorf College Wind Symphony and Choir. Greeting notes will be given by Forest City Mayor Rick Skjeie; Student Body President Ashley Lutrick; Waldorf College Faculty Chair David Damm; and Waldorf College Alumni Board Vice President Dr. Duane Jolivette.
The ceremony and reception are open to the public. If you are unable to attend, you can stream the inauguration at http://stream.waldorf.edu/. In the days following inauguration, the celebration will be available to download for free via iTunes U.
