Volunteers from Waldorf College joined a community group on Sept. 30 to help decorate downtown Forest City for the fall season.
Six volunteers from Waldorf – four staff members and two students – assisted members of Destination Forest City, a retail arm of the Forest City Chamber of Commerce, in placing corn stalks around 36 lamp posts along a stretch of Clark Street. Purple and gold ribbons are tied around the post recognizing Waldorf College's school colors. The corn stalks are complemented with straw bales, colored pumpkins and bittersweet.
The fall decorations will help celebrate Waldorf College's Homecoming Celebration, which is Oct. 8 through 10, said Julie Hagenson, co-chairwoman of Destination Forest City. The decorations also will be a part of Celebrating the Flavors of Forest City, an event Destination Forest City will conduct on Oct. 23. Hagenson and Deanna Rochleau are chairwomen of the group.
The corn stalks were cut and delivered by members of the Forest City High School Future Farmers of America, Hagenson said.
Participating in decorating were Waldorf College freshmen Tori Lagel and Emily Clausen and library assistant Cindy Fitzgerald, Academic Achievement Center for Excellence coordinator Sabrina Parcher, bookstore assistant Terri Van Hove and communications specialist Jason Eck.
Pat Galasso and Carolyn Frakes of Grow Forest City, which strives to make the city a tourism and entrepreneurial destination, also assisted in the fall decorating. They have led an initiative funded by city and private business to establish a brand for Forest City in an effort to make the city a destination spot for tourists and an attractive place for entrepreneurs to start businesses.
