Christmas with Waldorf returns with a weekend of holiday concert performances on Saturday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 5 to usher in the Advent season.

This year’s theme is “Come, See, Rejoice!” and will feature the Waldorf Choir, Waldorf Wind Symphony, St. Christopher Chorale, Sangkor Women’s Ensemble and the Viking Men’s Chorus. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 and 2 p.m. Dec. 5 in Hanson Fieldhouse on the Waldorf College campus. The concert will present Vivaldi’s “Gloria,” a major work for chorus and orchestra as part of Waldorf’s service of Lessons and Carols, which is modeled after the traditional Advent service at King's College in Cambridge, England. The concert also will feature the premiere of a new work by Waldorf composer in residence Nancy Farndale titled “O Come, Little Children.”

“I’m really looking forward to this year’s event,” said Blair Buffington, artistic director for the event and director of choral activities. “Our ensembles have been working diligently to prepare glorious music. All the details seem to be coming together to make this a beautiful showcase of fine arts at Waldorf, and a worshipful experience. The entire preparation process has been truly rewarding.”

Buffington will conduct the Waldorf Choir, St. Christopher Chorale and Viking Men’s Chorus while Travis Beck will conduct the Sangkor Women’s Ensemble. Waldorf director of instrumental activities Brent Dodson will lead the Waldorf Wind Symphony.

Concert tickets are $10 per person and $2 for students (college, high school or younger). All tickets must be ordered in advance. Ticket requests may be sent to: Christmas Tickets, Waldorf College, 106 S. Sixth St. Forest City, IA 50436. Please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope by Monday, Nov. 22, to receive your tickets. Seating is available for people with special needs.

Both performances will be preceded by meals. Attendees may choose a buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday featuring traditional American and Scandinavian foods or a brunch, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The brunch, a new option this year, and the dinner will be served in the Atrium, between Salveson and Thorson halls.

Tickets also are available for dinner and brunch and must be purchased in advance. Dinner is $17 per person. There is a $25 package special for dinner and the concert; however, students pay only $19 for the package. Brunch is $12 per person or $20 for concert and brunch. Students will pay $14 for the brunch and concert.

Christmas with Waldorf is a longstanding Waldorf College tradition. “It began, much like other colleges with Lutheran heritages, as a Christmas choir concert and evolved over the years,” Buffington said. “Waldorf changed formats five years ago to promote its music and art in a worshipful manner, and to have a program that is unique to Waldorf in the Midwest.”
