High school cross-country athletes are invited to Waldorf College for a recruiting day on Saturday, Dec. 4, to learn about the men’s and women’s programs at the school.
The event will be held immediately following the Waldorf Open House which is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon on Dec. 4. The open house is designed to give students an opportunity to tour the Waldorf campus, speak with students and professors, meet the president and learn about a variety of degree programs.
After the open house, prospective runners can chat with first-year head coach Matthew Boyles in the Atrium, between Salveson and Thorson halls. Boyles will present information about the cross-country programs and discuss his coaching and training philosophies.
“We are looking for optimistic, enthusiastic, respectful and goal-driven runners who would like to compete on the collegiate level,” Boyles said. “My goal as a coach is to help each individual reach new personal bests. We will be an energetic and optimistic team.”
Boyles joined Waldorf College in 2010. He is a three-time Olympic trials qualifier, a 10-time All-American and was named the 2004 All-Ohio Cross Country Runner of the Year among Division II and NAIA athletes.
Boyles previously coached at the University of Rio Grande in Ohio from 2008-2010. There, he recruited two of the largest classes in the program’s history. He also guided one cross-country team to nationals, and coached five individual national qualifiers in cross-country and track and an All-American in track.
Waldorf College, located in rural north-central Iowa, offers runners a variety of terrains.
“The running area here is quite good with a nice mix of rolling hills, parks, trails and lakes,” Boyles said.
Waldorf’s cross-country teams compete in the nine-team Midwest Collegiate Conference.
