Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Timothy A. Schmidt began the study of music at the early age of five studying music theory at the Cleveland Institute of Music and, at the age of six, piano with Robert Flanik. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio University, a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Minnesota. His teachers on piano include Joseph Howard, Richard Syracuse, George Katz, Theodore Lettvin, and Bernhard Weiser; and on harpsichord, Jane Burris, James Nicolson, Helen Keaney, and Daniel Pinkham.
A prolific recitalist, Timothy Schmidt’s concerts have taken him to three continents with extensive concerts in the United States, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, and Russia. He has served as guest Artist/Clinician for the North Dakota State Music Teachers Convention (2004) and the Montana State Music Teachers Association (2005) and as a collaborative musician with noted bass singer Daniel Smith (2006) and baritone singer Elias Mokole (2007).
The recipients of numerous awards and honors, he has performed with a number of orchestras including the Ft. Dodge Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Suburban Symphonic Winds, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
Timothy Schmidt was four times named Cultural Ambassador from the State of Iowa to China and Russia by Terry E. Branstad, Governor of Iowa, and has served as a member and chair of the board of the Iowa Arts Council. He is the recipient of the Holmen Award for Professional Excellence by Waldorf College and twice received faculty study grants by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
Timothy Schmidt has four recordings, “Purely Piano,” and “Purely Piano-Advent,” “Music of the Baroque from Spain, France and Germany” and the new release “If I Gained the World” which are regularly featured on radio broadcasts throughout the United States and abroad including Lutheran Vespers and the Protestant Hour of the Protestant Radio and Television Center. His recordings have won critical acclaim including the coveted “Angel Award” in Christian Broadcasting. He records for the DRP/ Sunset label of the Vantage Group, a division of Christian Network International in Nashville, Tennessee.
Timothy Schmidt is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, the Iowa Music Teachers Association, the North Iowa Music Teachers Association, and the Terrace Hill Endowment for Musical Arts. He has served in leadership roles at both the state and national levels including the Iowa Arts Council, Arts Midwest board, and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies. Timothy Schmidt is currently listed in the Directory of Iowa Artists and Performing Groups and the Performing Artist Touring Roster of the Iowa Arts Council.
Timothy Schmidt served as Professor of Music and Piano at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, for over 33 years, where he is now Professor Emeritus of Music.
