History of the 50 Days

The 50 Days of Service project began in the spring of 2006 over a 50-day period -- more than 50 projects were completed in that short time span. The campus community was abuzz with the exciting projects during the first year. Three spring break service trips took Waldorf students to Holden Village in Washington state, the hurricane devastated areas of Biloxi, Missippi, and a Habitat for Humanity build in Phoenix, Arizona. A food packaging event on Martin Luther King Jr. Day provided tens of thousands of meals to kids in Africa. A 3K3 walk-run-wag raised over $1,900 for the American Cancer Society. And many other service projects were complete by teams and organziations at Waldorf.

The final event of the 2006 50 Days of Service was a two-day, 144-mile relay for charity that took the runners from the State Capitol in Des Moines to Waldorf's campus in Forest City.

In 2007, another 50-day period saw over 50 projects occur. More food was packaged. More money was raised during the 3K3. More projects occured and the momentum of serving others continued as another academic year at Waldorf came to a close.

In 2008, a decision was made to make the 50 Days of Service last the entire year so all groups and teams across campus could participate. Many projects are continuing and many new ones are being established.
