JANUARY

Jan. 21 - MLK Day Food Packaging Event for Kids Against Hunger

RESULTS: About 400 volunteers packaged 62,557 meals and $9,238.40 was raised to pay for those meals. In all, nearly 200 Waldorf students and 60 Waldorf employees volunteered for this event!

Aramark Campus Dining introduces 2 promotions

PROJECT: Aramark Campus Dining is introducing a pair of promotions for contribution to the 50 Days campaign. Every Friday, employees can wear jeans to work if they donate a canned food item. For students and the public, they can save 50 cents off their meal if they bring in a 50-cent donation or bring in a canned food item. All donations will go to 50 Days of Service.

Completed: The Lutheran Leaders, nine Waldorf College international students, presented at the Promiseland Educational Programs at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Sunday, Jan. 27 and Wednesday, Jan. 30. They were well-received. Members included: Zecharias Negassa, Christine Kenyi, Ebenezer Djaleta, Mamisoa (Sera) Ranaivoson, Sitraka Rakotoarievelo, Samuel Sten, Lucy Killewo, Volamalala Ranaivoson and Tsimbina (Tsitsy) Andrianaivo.

 

FEBRUARY

PROJECT: Amnesty International will collect an offering and worship with the Church of the Damascus Road, the ELCA-affiliated parish at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility.
PROJECT: The Guild will shovel snow from sidewalks and driveways of the Forest City community after winter snowfalls.

Week of Feb. 3 - Campus Ministry "Bible Collection Drive"

PROJECT: "Bible Collection Drive" for St. Dysmus Lutheran Church - the congregation inside the prison walls at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, SD. Drop off new or gently used, soft cover Bibles at Recital Hall or Atrium.

Feb. 4 - April - Football team members serve as Breakfast Buddies at FC Elem. School

PROJECT: Members of the Waldorf College football team will serve as “Breakfast Buddies” at Forest City Elementary School each morning from 7:45-8:30. Players and coaches will join Breakfast Buddies from RSVP of North Iowa to mentor students and help send them to the day’s classes on a positive note. According to RSVP’s website, www.waldorf.edu/rsvp, 100 percent of school-identified students in the Breakfast Buddies mentoring program showed progress in academic performance last year.

Feb. 4-21 - Volleyball team to volunteer at YMCA and Good Samaritan Center

PROJECT: Adding to an already expansive record of service, Waldorf Volleyball team members will spend Mondays and Thursdays volunteering at the YMCA and Good Samaritan Center, both in Forest City. Team members will be at the YMCA, 6-7 a.m., and at the Good Samaritan Center, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Already this year, the team has been involved in organ donor awareness both on-campus and with other Midwest Collegiate Conference volleyball teams, with the Iowa Lions Eye Bank and the Winnebago County Food Bank.

Feb. 4-29 - Library Book Drive through "The African Library Project"

PROJECT: The Luise V. Hanson Library will hold a book drive to support small libraries for African schools and villages. Books will be collected at the Library.

Feb. 9 - Exit to Hope & Campus Ministry "Prayer Walk" at 1:00 pm

PROJECT: A prayer walk around Forest City. Prayers and music will be led by a core group of Waldorf students. The walk will last about an hour and refreshments will be served afterward. Food will be collected for the food drive. Meet at The Atrium at 1:00 p.m.

Feb. 11-March 28 - IT Dept. collects empty cans to help fund spring break mission trips

PROJECT: The IT Dept. will be collecting empty cans and bottles as their 50 Days of Service project. Please bring your empties to the IT Dept. during our open window hours. M-F, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The money raised will go to help fund the spring service trip!

Feb. 13 - Coaches vs Cancer Week

PROJECT: This week is Coaches vs Cancer week, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that encourages basketbal coaches and the teams to make a difference in the fight against cancer.  To date, more than $30 million has been raised in support of the American Cancer Societies lifesaving mission.The Waldorf College Athletic Department will be donating all gate receipts tonight to the coaches vs cancer initiative.

Feb. 16 - Sweetheart Dinner and a Show at 5:30 pm

PROJECT: In cooperation with RSVP and the Forest City Chamber of Commerce, the Committee on Vocation and Service is hosting “Sweetheart Dinner and A Show.”

This event, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Waldorf Atrium, is an opportunity for members of the community to get together and enjoy an evening of fine dining and entertainment. All proceeds will go to 50 Days of Service and global ministries. The “black tie optional” candlelight buffet dinner will feature live music and entertainment by local personalities. After dinner, everyone is invited to attend the Waldorf College Theatre Department production of “Woman In Mind” at 7:30. Free child care is available from 5:30-10 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, across the street from the Waldorf campus. Tickets are $15 per person for dinner only and $20 for dinner and the show.

Feb. 18-22 - Alumni serve as tutors across the country

PROJECT: 50 Days of Service isn’t just for current Waldorf students. Waldorf College alumni from across the country are getting in the act of serving, too. Alumni of all variety are getting involved – including classes ranging from Class of 1947 to Class of 2007 and communities from Washington to Florida – in service projects such as tutoring elementary or high school-age students, reading stories to youths or meeting with persons and their families after surgery.

Feb. 18-29 - Education Club sends shirts to Gage Middle School

PROJECT: Education Club members are holding a T-shirt drive for Gage Middle School in California. Shirts can be purchased in the bookstore and then placed in donation boxes to be sent to Gage. A booth will also be opened at the Waldorf men’s and women’s basketball games on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The women’s basketball game begins at 5:30 with the men’s game to follow.

Feb. 20 - Business Dept. bake sale

PROJECT: Students and faculty from the Business department will have a bake sale during Wednesday’s home basketball games. Goods will be sold in the lobby with proceeds being donated to the Forest City Food Bank. The women’s basketball game begins at 5:30 with the men’s game to follow.

Feb. 20 - Pet Therapy hosted by Waldorf Wellness Club

PROJECT: Pet therapy day, possibly with Humane Society, in Waldorf's Atrium.

MARCH

March 2-5 - Film Club & Comic Book Club's Film Festival

PROJECT: Film festival showing socially relevant films. A talkback will occur after each movie. A food drive will also be conducted for a local food bank. Donate a non-perishable food item, watch a movie and discuss it - sounds like a good night! Location will be Smith Theatre. Times are 3/2 - 6 pm, 3/3-3/5 - 8 pm.

Mar. 3 - Dr. Seuss Day

PROJECT: Education Club members will read Dr. Seuss books to children at Hanson Family Life Center on the morning of March 3. Afterwards, they will organize activities in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

March 10-14 - Admissions Staff Daffodil Fundraiser for the American Cancer Society

PROJECT: Takes place prior to March 10 with pick up of Daffodils during week of March 10-14.

March 12 - Sign Up Event for 3K3 Walk, Run, Wag Event

PROJECT: Sign up in The Atrium from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for the 3K3 Event to be held on April 8. To download an entry brochure, please open the following links: Page 1, Page 2. After proving last year that good things come from threes, Waldorf College’s “three Kristi’s” are bringing back their highly successful 3K3 event. Last year, Kristi Carlson, Kristi Leonard and Kristi Osheim introduced the event at the inaugural 50 Days of Service, hoping to generate around $1,000 in donations for the American Cancer Society. Mar. 13 - Career Center workers assist Youth for Christ

PROJECT: Staff and student workers from the Career Center will assist the director of Youth for Christ (The Bridge) in Lake Mills on the afternoon of Thursday, March 13. Workers will assist with administrative tasks and work with kids in their after-school program.

March 15-20 - Spring Break Mission Trip to Eagle Butte, South Dakota

PROJECT: Total cultural immersion with Cheyenne River Youth Project. Will be working with children on the Reservation, repairing homes, getting the organic garden ready for planting, working in the food pantry and nutrition center, and learning about a dynamic and fascinating culture.

Mar. 26 - SWAT concert

PROJECT: SWAT is organizing a donation-for-admittance concert for students, scheduled March 26 in the Atrium. More details as they become available.

Mar. 27 - Student Health Services organizes a preparedness day with mock emergency situation

PROJECT: Student Health Services, in conjunction with Winnebago County Public Health, is organizing a mock emergency medicine drive-thru that will simulate an epidemic such as bird flu or anthrax. Using 50-plus students in cars plus walk-ins, the goal will be to “medicate” 300 persons within one hour of simulation. They will also be publicizing community preparedness throughout Winnebago County through magnets and fliers. This event will be held in the Senior Citizen Center from 1:15-2:15 p.m.

Last year, Kristi Carlson, Kristi Leonard and Kristi Osheim introduced the event at the inaugural 50 Days of Service, hoping to generate around $1,000 in donations for the American Cancer Society. The event raised over $1,900. This year’s goal: to raise $3,000 for the American Cancer Society.
